Candidacy and Considerations
As you get older, your skin starts to lose elasticity. This can be especially evident in the thin, delicate skin around your eyes. When your upper eyelids droop, it can make you appear tired and several years older than you actually are. In severe cases, your sagging lids can actually fall across your pupils, impairing your line of vision. When your lower lids droop, it can expose the whites of your eyes below the iris. You may also be concerned with puffiness or bags under the eyes.
If you suffer from any of these conditions and you have generally good physical health, you may be an excellent candidate for an eye lift.
The Blepharoplasty Procedure
Your blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, will be performed as an outpatient procedure, but it will take place at a hospital. James E. Murphy, M.D. can address the upper lids, lower lids, or both at the same time. After you have received general or local anesthesia, he will create tiny incisions in your eyelids. He will carefully place these incisions so that any scarring will be well-hidden.
If you are having upper eyelid surgery, he will place the incision along the eyelid crease. Then he will eliminate excess fat, tighten drooping muscles, and trim away loose skin. For lower eyelid blepharoplasty, the incision will be made along your lash line. Alternatively, James E. Murphy, M.D. may place it just inside your lower eyelid. Then he will remove excess tissues and reposition displaced fat pockets.
Blepharoplasty Recovery and Results
Recovery from eye lift surgery is typically short. For the first few days, you may experience some eye irritation and sensitivity. In some cases, your vision may be slightly blurred, or you may have double vision. These side effects are temporary and should resolve within a few days. Cold compresses, ointments, and oral medications can speed your healing and minimize your discomfort.
As soon as the initial swelling begins to subside, you should notice the results of your eye lift. After your surgery, you may look younger and more rejuvenated. The bags under your eyes may be significantly less noticeable. If your drooping lids were blocking your line of vision, you will now enjoy unobscured sight. Thanks to blepharoplasty, your beautiful eyes will once again be your brightest and most noticeable feature.
